What the pro actually does
Small holes get a mesh patch and two or three thin coats of compound; anything bigger gets a cut-in patch backed to the studs. Each coat has to dry before the next, so a patch often needs a return visit or a few hours on site. Texture matching and painting can be included if you ask when booking.
Drywall Repair & Patching questions
How much does it cost to patch a hole in drywall?
A single small hole is usually $80 to $150. Several holes, a large opening, or matching an orange-peel or knockdown texture pushes it toward $300. Painting afterwards is normally quoted on top.
Do I need a licensed contractor to patch drywall?
For an ordinary patch, no. Small repairs that don't touch structure, wiring or plumbing and don't need a building permit are handyman work in most places. Anything structural, or a job needing a permit, is different — and rules vary by state and city, so check locally if you're unsure.
Will the patch be invisible?
On a flat painted wall, usually — after paint. On a textured wall it depends on how well the texture is matched, and a repainted patch can read slightly different against older, faded paint. Painting the whole wall solves it.
